Youth Mentoring Program

The Hervey Bay Youth Mentoring Program is for young people within the school system who are experiencing difficulty interacting, participating and contributing to the community in positive, constructive and respectful ways.

It is a model of linking community members with young people who may need extra support in these transitional stages. All it takes to be a Youth Mentor, is a commitment to spend approximately two hours a week with a young person.

Mentors will be placed with young people to provide positive role models and influences.

Mentors will share their life experiences with young people in order to improve their capacity to cope with important transition points in their lives.

Through these relationships and friendships, mentors will provide positive feedback to encourage young people to achieve their goals in life (ie education, training, employment and intellectual, physical, social, emotional, spiritual development).

“Volunteers work with young people, meeting them at their schools, to develop mentoring relationships with the students. The volunteer mentors provide support for young people in primary and high schools to remain engaged in education and social support. We have a wonderful team of volunteers that really make a difference to the students’ lives.

Students who have entered the mentoring program were identified by their principal, guidance officer or parent as having educational or social issues that may be addressed, at least in part, by a mentoring relationship with a positive trained adult. Many who started the program some seven years ago have linked well with their mentors and have gone onto complete year 12, become school captains or at least remain connected to their school”.

Setting off on the Waterline Challenge 150kms Walk
Setting off on the Waterline Challenge 150kms Walk

‘JULIAN Day is no stranger to daunting tasks.

Yesterday, the 59-year-old Sydneysider began a 170km trek along the coastline from Noosa to Bundaberg that will take him five days.

While the challenge will be gruelling, it’s a conquest that might seem minor in comparison to his experiences in childhood.

“I had cancer three times as a child,” Mr Day said.

“The idea here is I’m putting back in to life. Everybody can do things that they don’t think they can. It’s a question of putting your mind to it.

“I’ve always been an active walker, an adventurer, a leader, I’ve always been actively out there. And I just loved the coast, so I wanted to do it all together.”

Mr Day, known as the Beach Walker, has completed a number of similar long walks since 1994, sticking to the coastline as much as possible.

He’s walked the entire New South Wales coast, and now plans to walk as far as Townsville in Queensland, then down to Victoria and South Australia.

While he usually walks alone, this time he’ll be flanked by podiatrist Dr Bronwyn Cooper and Preetie Shehkkar.

“I do one (a walk) every nine to 12 months,” Mr Day said.

“When I first did my walk from Sydney to Wooloongong, I didn’t have any plans at that stage to do the other walks I’ve done. It just became that.

“I’ve walked the whole coast of New South Wales, more than 2000km all together.

“I’ve just finished one just north of Brisbane in to Noosa, and now this is the Noosa to Bundaberg one.

“I’m hoping to go as far as Townsville, then after that it’s not safe to walk along the beach because of crocodiles.

“I would say to anybody to try something different and see where it takes you.”

Being an active member of his local Rotary, Mr Day was put in touch with a Hervey Bay Rotary Club who nominated a community group to benefit from his fundraising.

“The further you go out of the metropolitan areas, you want to support the local charities,” Mr Day said.

“They nominated the Hervey Bay neighbourhood centre, and it’s a youth mentoring program.”

Mr Day will also be promoting the Waterline Challenge during his trek, an adventure challenge fundraiser he developed eight years ago.

Teams register to collectively accumulate more than 52,000km – approximately Australia’s coastline length – in outdoor activities to raise money for selected charities.

“While I was doing all these walks I thought, why don’t I get anyone else to do this?” Mr Day said.

“You can choose how you do it, you can walk, run, cycle, canoe, horse ride, as long as it’s not motorised.

“You put the team together, and you support one of the charities we list on the website.”

Visit waterlinechallenge.org, and if you see the team walking from Rainbow Beach today, give them a wave and make a donation’.

The Intrepid three!
The Intrepid Three. Waterline Challenge Foundation stalwarts.

Julian Day, Dr Bronwyn Cooper & Preetie Shehkkar will be covering up to 170km along the coast from 8th to 12th May 2017. They will be walking along every single beach and over every headland following the motto of ‘Close to the Coast’.

First day is from Noosa to a camp site 44km along one beach, next day into Rainbow Beach, then across Fraser Island to Hervey Bay. Day 4 to Woodgate and finish on Day 5 at Burnett Heads. There will be eight water crossings! Wish them luck!

They are raising money for the Hervey Bay Youth Mentoring Program which supports young people (7-17 years old) at risk of disengaging with the education system to fully participate in the community in positive, constructive and respected ways.

Preetie “Why am I doing this? – No surprise here…Giving back to our native community especially the youth – a little contribution for our beautiful coastline – and supporting my visionary friend Julian”.

You can donate by transferring funds into the ‘Julian R Day Coastal Walk”  every cent is much appreciated!

Support them with your donations through the month of May 2017.  Deposit directly into Julian R Day Coastal Walk Charity Account.  BSB:112-879  A/C No. 477761552.  All donations over $2 Tax Deductible.

Leader, Julian has walked the whole of the NSW Coast and raised over $40,000 for various charities along the way. He’s now well into Queensland and they will continue north from Bundaberg at the end of 2017.

His walks have included four south from Sydney to Eden and north from Sydney to Newcastle, to Forster, to Port Macquarie, to Coffs Harbour, to Byron Bay, to the top end of Moreton Island and Brisbane to Noosa.

Warmly supported by Jim Bennett, President of the Noosa Rotary Club who has helped with all the practicalities for the Team. Thank you Jim!

The original 170kms is now possibly 150kms due to high tides and restricted access.  Unsurprisingly, none of them are complaining about this!

However, some are taking the opportunity to ‘warm up’ with some special treatments from Peppers Resort who have been hosting them today before the walk kicks off tomorrow!

No complaints there either, although that might change after Day 1, when aching feet might be the order of the day!

Also supporting this considerable effort are Gary and Sharon Parsons.  You may remember Gary as a World and Guiness Book record holder for long distance running.

Larger than life Garry (Patron) and Sharon the incredible woman behind the man, were there to inspire the Team before their journey!

Local news station ‘Noosa News‘ has interviewed our Team, and will be posting their progress ‘Live’ on Tuesday.  We’ll let you know where to look to see what they are up to, and whose is complaining most!

Preetie will also be broadcasting to Facebook Live – we’ll let you know when that is happening in advance so you can catch up with their progress.

Good Luck! from all the team at Waterline.  We’ll be monitoring the progress each day this week!

Don’t forget to support the trio for this great cause. Every step they take is for Hervey Bay Youth Mentoring Programme and we wish them… ALL THE BEST!

And hopefully, no crocs or sharks in the Estuaries!

WE DID IT!

Thank you to everyone who came along to the first fund-raising Waterline awareness event. To all of you who are Supporters, Sponsors, Ambassadors and Patrons – thank you. And to Manly Life Saving Club! Also to the Waterline TEAM, and of course, last but not least, to the Hon Tony Abbott MP who cycled to the Club and gave up his own Saturday morning to help us out.

On the 12th November, Australia introduced our new national charity event at Manly Life Saving Club. The Waterline Challenge. It is the brainchild of three times childhood cancer survivor Julian Day, as his way of giving back.

Thanks to the generosity of the Manly Life Saving Club and with the help of Mr Abbott  and our Ambassadors including Liesl Tesch AM, Matt Levy OAM, and Tony Bonner compering the proceedings (Man from Snowy River) we made a fantastic start to help in raising awareness for this national event.

We even had whales breaching off the beach (thumbs up from the coastline so far!) to get the morning off to a high note. This was captured on video along with the rest of the event, while also being broadcast on Facebook Live. Look out for this on You Tube if you would like to share the morning with us.

Over the next 48 hours Australians took to the waterways and coastlines to raise money for 12 amazing charities. Swimming, walking, kayaking and even horse-riding!

The aim for 2017 will be to cover the length of the coastline of Australia (52,000 kms!) with our collective efforts.

guy-leech    Guy Leech explained what it is all about on Channel 7’s The Morning Show (watch this great interview!) and Matt Levy OAM followed that up with another exceptional interview on The Daily Edition while our other Ambassadors spread the word on various radio shows and print media throughout the week.

We align ourselves with World Kindness Day which takes place on the 13th November each year, and President Michael Lloyd White said a few words about this growing global movement now in 28 countries throughout the world. Explaining why, in times of diversity of opinions politically and economically, that kindness remains a key factor in creating a more harmonious world.

Our Twitter/Instagram campaign #makeasplash is getting some famous faces involved. Mr Abbott got into the spirit of it all to get the ball rolling! Our SnapChat Geofilter proved popular too.

Make sure you post a ‘splash’ selfie or photo on our Instagram or Twitter accounts. @waterline.challenge for Insta, or @waterlineCF for Twitter.

Then it was the time for the ‘official’ launch and ribbon cutting to get WATERLINE off the mark. Mr Abbott did the honours with Tony Bonner watching on.

One of our sponsors Newsmaker‘s Leila Henderson  flew in especially to support our launch and we thank her, and our other recent major sponsor SEOfast for their generous involvement which will undoubtedly help Waterline grow to the next level. In future alongside our charities, we will be raising funds for grants to improve water quality, marine conservation and environmental projects around Australia.

Keep an eye on this blog for updates and further information about this and any other developments.

Thank you to everyone at Team Waterline also for making this all possible, too many names to mention but every contribution has played a huge part in getting us this far!

Next year, we will introduce a free ‘app’ that will tot up the kms we all manage to cover over the Waterline Weekend and an opportunity to fund-raise throughout the year, alongside a game you won’t want to put down!

This is a very Australian initiative and a great way for people to raise money for a charity of their choice whether it is Surf Life Saving Australia, Soldier On, Starlight Children’s Foundation there is something for everyone to get behind.

So TEAM UP AUSTRALIA, and get behind this so we can show the world what Aussies can do!

And as a P.S.  THANK you to Layne Beachley for her SUP Paddle on the Gold Coast, to support the Waterline Challenge. Layne’s foundation Aim for the Stars is one of our nominated Charities.
